Angie- RD400

My 1977 Yamaha RD400 "Angie" (Anger Management)

I restored this bike from the ground up purely with the intentions of one day taking it to the track. She had a hard life in earlier times, then waited around forever for this day to come. The forks have been rebuilt with Race Tech internal components (cartridge emulators and fork springs), while Ikon (Koni) shocks were fitted on the rear. I opted to go with Woodcraft clip-ons rather than Clubman handlebars and foot controls are Fast From the Past (Tarozzi) rearsets. I sidelined the chunky stock seat and modified the frame to fit an ABS café race seat. The original chain was swapped out for a 520 chain, while the gearing was changed to be more track appropriate. Traction is put to the pavement with a Barnett kevlar racing clutch and Avon Roadrider MkII tires mounted on custom-built RD350 wire-spoke wheels. The engine underwent some changes as well- most of it is stock, but it's been modified. Now connected by a Banshee crossover tube, the VM28 carburetors got bigger jets all around to accommodate the increased air flow from the Y-boot and UniFilter foam filter. The reed cages were hogged out and modified utilizing TDR Stage 2 reeds, and the intake tract lengthened by 9mm reed spacers. The cylinders were ported and the head was skimmed, the dome was reshaped. The expansion chambers were custom handmade by Yamaha tuning genius Brian Turfrey. Timing is controlled by an HPI electronic ignition system with a pre-programmed curve.
